  1. War Erupts

  2. South takes control • As states seceded, they took over US controlled forts. • Fort Sumter: US fort in South Carolina • Lincoln needed to supply the fort but this meant war between North and South • Lincoln warns the Confederacy he is sending supplies (and troops with them) • Confederates attack Fort Sumter • Marks beginning of Civil War

  3. Lincoln calls for troops • Lincoln decides to call up militia members to put down the uprising in the South • This pushes many unsure Southern states to the Confederacy like Virginia • Virginia becomes important to Confederates • Rich and populous • Richmond becomes capital • Border States (those between North and South) decide to stick with the Union.

  4. Strategy for War • Confederacy: Defensive war (defend) • Hoped to break the will of Union • Hoped Foreign countries would back King Cotton (fails) • Ends up adopting offensive war later • Union: Anaconda Plan (invade and conquer) • Blockade the south • Control Mississippi River and cut Confederates in two • Capture the Southern capital at Richmond • Meant to cut off the South’s Economy

  5. First Battle of Bull Run • Union forces attack Confederate troops in Virginia • North believed that this would be a quick victory and end the rebellion • The Union was defeated by Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson and forced to retreat • Important lessons of Bull Run: • Fighting would be bloody • War would not end quickly • Southerners would fight to the death for their Confederacy
